Artist Statement
Ten years ago my needs to express myself artistically began to move
seriously towards landscape and still life painting. Traveling presented a
challenge in both time and media to this pursuit. At first black and white
photography was fulfilling, followed by sketchbooks with colored pencils
water colors. It all had to be fast. I came to realize how all-consuming
and challenging capturing the beauty of the great outdoors was.
Living in and traveling to beautiful places has given me an endless
source of inspiration: the natural world. Painting Plein air in oil has
not only brought me to yet a new threshold in expressing the natural
beauty I see, but also restores me. The great and endless challenges of
attempting to accurately capture the outdoors with its infinite and
dramatic variations of shape, color, permeating light; in addition to the
effects of distance are the obstacles which, as an artist, I am grateful
for.
