Colin Poole is a painter and a
sculptor. His work is incredibly diverse, ranging from high detail
realism to more painterly and impressionistic.
He paints largely oils and most of his sculpture is figurative
and cast in bronze.
Colin
does a lot of his painting outside on location, called ‘plein air’
painting. These images are
done all in one sitting ‘alla prima’ at locations throughout the
world, such as Greece, Italy, Costa Rica, Indonesia, Paris, Santa Fe,
Taos, and California. The
experience of traveling; absorbing a new setting, culture, scenery and
quality of light are a great inspiration to the artist.
These paintings are done quickly and all at once by necessity--
each captures a particular moment in time and the light changes rapidly.
You
will also see in the portfolio a style Colin calls “high energy
realism”, figurative work, and sculpture.
Colin’s diversity is one of his greatest strengths.
He has developed incredibly strong technique in a variety of
media and styles, which allows him to manifest his numerous and varied
creative visions with great success.

While embracing traditions of
classical realism, I create intensely personal visions of nature. The
distinctiveness of my brushwork, the signature terra
rosa
underpainting, and innate sense of composition link my work to the
lineage of the Old Masters. I
am not interested in the factual representation of the landscape or
object painted, but how it resonates with the viewer’s experience.
For me perfection is not flawlessness, but rather inspired by a
time worn limb or the scarred surface of a mango.
My still lifes possess an
Old World
feel with a contemporary edge. I
want more than the accurate rendering of an object.
I want to uncover an apple’s character; its nicks and
scratches, the colorations and uniqueness of shape; to infuse a
glistening slice of watermelon with the memories of summer picnics, the
blackberries rich with the reflections of a sultry afternoon.
The experience of traveling;
absorbing a new setting, culture, scenery and quality of light are of
great inspiration to me. It
is not unusual for me to travel nine hours a day to discover landscapes
that are part reality, part manifested from my dreams. I seek to
blur the lines between canvas and reality so that reverie draws you in
and you can hear the rustle of the leaves; feel the warmth of the
sunshine and inhale the fragrance on the breeze. The painting is
complete when I put my brush down and go for a stroll in it.
